#NFLPreview2016 : AFC North

Steelers (11-5) – The Steelers in my opinion is poised yet again to make a run in the NFL playoffs again. Last year the Steelers put up a combined 63 points against the two best scoring defenses last year ( Bengals, Seahawks ). The suspension of RB Le’Veon Bell ( 4 Games) &  WR Martavis Bryant ( All of 2016) are the biggest question marks on offense. Big Ben will have to rely on 33 year old RB Deangelo Williams for the 1st quarter of 2016. Despite the season long suspension of  Bryant the WR core is booming as Antonio Brown continues his dominance as the premier wideout in the NFL. I expect Marckus Wheaton and Sammie Coates to fill in Bryant’s absence.  The defense is comming into its owns as they adjust to the “Tampa 2 ” scheme. Look out for Stephen Tuitt as he emerge as one of the top D Ends in this Leauge . The Steelers are still the class of the AFC North and are poised for another run that could land them in SB 51.

Ravens (9-7)- The Ravens was a uncharacteristic 5-11 last year. The core of the Ravens ( Suggs, Flacco, Smith & others) were injured for the majority of the season. The biggest question facing the Ravens is the health of Joe Flacco . The Ravens was ranked 8th (total passing) 14th (total yards) who will get a healthy receiving core finally. Benjamin Watson is a sneaky acquisition who still has gas in his tank. Terrell Suggs returns to a Ravens D who ranked 8th (total yards allowed) 10th ( passing yards allowed) & 12th (total defense). Ravens also bolstered their defensive backfield with the acquisition of Eric Weddle and former CB Lardarius Webb moves to the strong saftey spot. The Ravens rarely have concsecutive bad years and I think they bounce back.

Bengals (8-7-1)- The window is slowly closing on the Bengals . After the wildcard loss to the Steelers the Bengals return with a healthy Andy Dalton(25tds 7INT 106.2 QBR) who sustained a thumb injury ending his season prematurely & new offensive coordinator Ken Zampese who replaces Hugh Jackson. The cupboard is stocked with a 2 headed RB attack with Jermey Hill and Giovani Benard & receiving core of AJ Green, & Brandon Lafell that will help Zampese transition into his new position. The Bengals defense was one of the NFL’ s elite defenses in 2015 (Ranked #2 in Pts allowed , 10th in sacks) . The Bengals D will be without Reggie Nelson who signed with the Raiders & Vontaze Burfict will serve a 3 game suspension . The only thing that concerns me is their questionable secondary as it’s riddled with underachieving talent with Dre Kirkpatrick & Darquez Dennard. This team takes a slight step back , but will be in the playoff hunt .

Browns (5-11) – 1st year head coach Hugh Jackson has big shoes to fill. As the city enjoyed it’s 1st major sports championship in 54 years & the city is looking for its Browns to turn it around. RG3 becomes the 25th QB to start for the Browns since 1999. The Browns will rely on a heavy running attack with RB Issiah Crowell ,Duke Johnson & company. The receiving core of the Browns has the ability to improve immensely once Josh Gordon serves his 4 game suspension . Corey Coleman , Taylor Gabriel , Ricardo Louis have the ability to gel well with Gordon . Garry Barnidge proved in 2015 that he can be an elite TE in the NFL . Defensive coordinator Ray Horton returns to the land. Horton looks to recapture the magic of 2013 , where the Browns had its best statistical defense. Hopefully Joe Haden can stay healthy. This team will take some lumps , but this team is headed in the right direction.

NBA Draft 2016: Winners & Losers

2016-NBA-mock-Draft

This years NBA Draft was the type of draft that we always envision (multiple trading of picks, surprise picks & college coaches calling GMs begging for them to pick their former players) .There were definitely winners and losers in this years draft so I will give you top 3 winners and top 3 losers…

Winners:

Orlando Magic: The Magic pulled off the biggest trade of the draft in their favor. Losing Victor Oladipo is major but the Magic need a all-star caliber guy whp can take them to the next level. Acquiring Serge Ibaka will give the Magic a legitimate defensive presence that will bode well with Aaron Gordon, Evan Fournier & company. I expect Serge to become a all-star and taking the Magic to another level.

Phoenix Suns: The Suns biggest need was to solidify their front court. Drafting Croatian sensation Dragan Bender and trading up to draft Marquese Chriss will address the Suns needs immediately. The Suns are now Kentucky U of guards once again by drafting Tyler Ulis ( 5’9 who has a Celtics Isaiah Thomas type of abilities) teaming up w/ Eric Bledsoe, Devin Booker, & Archie Goodwin.

Atlanta Hawks : The Hawks prior to the draft may have struck gold by trading Jeff Teauge. I’m  only saying that its gold because of the fact that Teauge was on the trading block for the majority of the 15-16 season and to come away w/ a lottery pick is a heck of a deal. Drafting Taurean Prince and DeAndre Bembry will provide the Hawks two excellent wing defenders and  guys with eons of college experience.

LOSERS

Boston Celtics: You had one Job and one Job only….Trade your picks for a viable starter who can make an immediate impact…HELL you had 8 PICKS…this is what they did with the picks  (Disclaimer : you may only know 3 of them tops!!)..(Source ESPN)

1 (3): Jaylen Brown, SF, California

1 (16): Guerschon Yabusele, PF, France

1 (23): Ante Zizic, C, Croatia

2 (45): Demetrius Jackson, PG, Notre Dame

2 (51): Ben Bentil, PF, Providence

2 (58): Abdel Nader, PF, Iowa State

Traded away: Nos. 31 and 35 to the Grizzlies

Traded for: 2019 Grizzlies first-round pick

The Celtics are on the verge of becoming a 50 plus wining team and it was contingent on a strong draft. Hopefully a Tier 1 or Tier 2 Free-agent will land in their lap.

Milwaukee Bucks: THON MAKER…Need i say more…I understand Jalen Rose stating that we are in the age of position-less basketball, but getting a guy who is similar to your  best player ( German Freak) at #10 is the biggest stretch since The Cavs drafting Anthony Bennett #1 in 2013. Maker is a raw prospect who at this point is the biggest mystery going forward

Sacremento Kings: Are you surprised that the Kings are on this list? They have been on this list damn near every year specially this decade. They are the Clippers of the 80’s 90’s and the early 2000s when it comes to NBA Draft …just cant get it right to save their lives. First you trade down to get Georgious Papaginaonis , a German big-man then you draft Skal Labissiere ( a stretch power forward at best). I give the kings a crumb of kudos by drafting Malachi Richardson who is a excellent scorer who has great length..

Vaseline to MVP! Re-Invent Yourself!!!!

It’s funny that today out of all days I was thinking I need to re-evaluate my life…. I know once you hit your 30s it seems like life is at a standstill to say the least. As I was formulating a plan to re invigorate myself  & blog I ran across a story that truly inspired me.

Do you remember this NBA Standout ? This guy from Georgia Tech with immense potential (that many suggest that he didn’t live up to the hype) the guy who played for several NBA teams including the New York Knicks( where many said he was at the forefront of the Knicks dysfunction).  The guy who was the poster child of jokes (thank god there wasn’t memes back then) after the MSG & Vasaline situation.

AP Photo

What if I told you that this 38 year old former NBA Standout has completely changed the narrative of his life. Once regarded as an enigma Marbury became a 3 -time champion (2012, 2014, 2015)of the Beijing Ducks of the Chinese Basketball Association .Marbury has a statue, postage stamp, & a musical inspired by his 2nd act in Beijing. In March  Marbury captured his 3rd championship  ( Averaged 29.7 PPG, 4.8 Rebounds, 5.7 Steals named Finals MVP) and to cap off a great 2015 a 300 square feet museum will open on December 28th to honor Marbury’s career with the Ducks.

So in life when you feel like your at rock bottom or feel that your current situation will be your final destination….draw inspiration from Stephon Marbury and re-invent yourself!!!!

Couch Coach 2014 NBA Playoffs Preview: Pacers vs Wizards

Credit: Brian Spurlock USA Today Sports

The Indiana Pacers & the Washington Wizards enter their Eastern Conference Semifinals match-up in remarkably different fashion.

The Pacers were considered the toast of the league during the all-star break then it all went downhill. Despite the regular season collapse the Pacers still managed the #1 seed and their 1st round matchup with the Atlanta Hawks was going to be a cake walk….Not so fast… The  (38-44) Hawks pushed the Pacers to Game 7. The Hawks took advantage of several match-up advantages…..Jeff Teague exposed George Hill.

The Wizards was considered a good team , but the biggest knock on them was their lack of playoff experience coupled with a young backcourt. The Wizards simply demolished the Chicago Bulls in their 1st round match-up in 5 games. Wall and Beal proved their critics as the nearly averaged 20 PPG a piece in their series vs Chicago.

In a series like this generally the best player is the deciding factor & Paul George fits that bill. George flexed his muscle in Game 7 vs the Hawks pouring in a career playoff high 30 points and 11 rebounds….expect him to have several nights like this!

Most Intriguing Matchups:

Paul George vs Trevor Ariza

Lance Stephenson vs Bradley Beal

The Wizards Win if:  John Wall completely dominate his matchup against George Hill & have a Jeff Teague-esque series coupled with Trevor Ariza ability to neutralize Paul George.

The Pacers Win if: Roy Hibbert comes back to All-Star form (the classic big man that is missing in today’s game) & Paul George must take over offensively night end night out!

Prediction: Pacers in 6!!

Couch Coach NBA Playoff Preview: Pacers vs Hawks

The Indiana Pacers (56-26) and the Atlanta Hawks (38-44) square off once again in the first round of the NBA Playoffs (Pacers defeated the Hawks in 6 games last year). The Pacers are limping into this series (10-13 in last 23 games) despite being 46-13 once upon a time.  During the post All-Star collsape of the Pacers their most head shaking loss came at the hands of the Hawks as they were defeated 107-88. If the Pacers are limping in the Hawks have damn near crawled in the playoffs being the only team under .500 to make it to this years playoffs. The Hawks have a multitude of match-up problems with the Pacers. Paul George’s(21.7 PPG) ability to slash to the basket will definitely flourish in this series along with David West’s (14.0 PPG) midrange dominance & hopefully a rejuvenated Roy Hibbert will give Atlanta a world of trouble. The Hawks are a terrific passing team in which provides open looks to their skilled shooters (The Hawks are among the leauge leaders in 3 Pointers made). Can the Hawks  be the 9th  #8 seed to knock off the #1 seed since 1985?  ABSOUTLEY NOT!!!

Prediction: Pacers in 5
